I’m Bunmi Olatunji, Associate Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, and This is How I Work

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University. I also serve as the Director of Clinical Training in the clinical science program at Vanderbilt. My work in the Emotion and Anxiety Research Lab (EARL) aim is to advance knowledge of the measurement, development, maintenance, and treatment of anxiety disorders. Although these objectives encompass a broad range of topics, we are specifically interested in the role of emotions (i.e., fear, disgust, anger) in the etiology and maintenance of anxiety pathology. The EARL operates largely from an experimental psychopathology framework. That is, we utilize basic experimental research methods to inform our understanding of anxiety and its disorders.

What apps/tools/software can you not live without?

iPhone

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or life hack?

You have to be willing to prioritize without excessive guilt. Not everything on the to-do-list can be given equal time and attention. It is also important that sometimes it is okay to say no (once you learn to prioritize you will also have a better sense of the kinds of things to say no to every now and then).

What’s your workspace set up like?

Simple, yet functional. I have two monitors and a keyboard on my desk (I try to keep it clutter free to avoid distractions but I often fail at this).

How do you keep track of things you need to do (any to-do-list apps)?

I use to the iPhone calendar.

Besides your phone or computer, what gadget can’t you live without, and why?

Nothing comes to mind. I tend to be relatively gadget-free.

What everyday thing can you do better than most people? What’s your secret?

I think I am good at multi-tasking. Of course the ‘secret’ is determining what is important and how to allocate effort.

What do you listen to while you work?

I usually have Pandora playing in the background (perhaps John Legend, Bob Marley, Maxwell, etc.).

What are you currently reading?

David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell

How do you recharge?

Bootcamp. It clears my head, challenges me, and does wonders for my sleep.

How do you balance your work life and your home/family life?

I think balance will always be a work in progress for me. My thinking is that as long as I prioritize efforts towards balance then that is okay. My wife has been a remarkable source of balance for me. We are active travelers, hooked on Netflix, and love to discover as much of Nashville as we can. This naturally forces me to put the laptop down and turn off the phone from time to time. The good news is that I never regret doing so.

What’s your sleep routine like?

I actually sleep quite well all things considered. On a typical night I might go to be at 11.30pm and get up around 7.00am.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Surround yourself with people who are much smarter than you are.
